Discussion
Refugees and migrants often face overlapping barriers when trying to access information, essential services and opportunities to rebuild their lives, particularly where digital systems, language needs and complex procedures make support harder to navigate. While digital tools can improve access to services, education and livelihoods, exclusion persists when people lack affordable internet access, devices, digital skills, safe online participation or reliable information. A meaningful discussion should therefore focus on joined-up support that strengthens inclusion, reduces isolation and improves access to housing, employment, health and wellbeing. [unhcr.org]
Important points to discuss
- Digital exclusion and information poverty: Many refugees and migrants still struggle to access online services because they may not have reliable connectivity, suitable devices or digital skills, and they can also face misinformation and online hostility.
- Language and communication barriers: Language barriers, low awareness of entitlements and limited access to interpreting or translated support can prevent people from using health, employment and other essential services.
- Employment and training: Access to work is often affected by difficulty recognising overseas qualifications, unfamiliar recruitment systems, limited digital literacy, childcare and transport barriers, and discrimination in the labour market.
- Housing and financial insecurity: Safe, stable housing and adequate income are essential for integration, yet UK frontline data shows rising destitution and homelessness among refugees and migrants, including newly recognised refugees. [naccom.org.uk]
- Health and mental wellbeing: Refugees and migrants exposed to adversity are at higher risk of depression, anxiety and PTSD, while language barriers, stigma and poor continuity of care can make support harder to access. [who.int]
- Legal status and navigating systems: Uncertain legal status, complex procedures and difficulty understanding entitlements can delay access to housing, healthcare, education and wider support.
- Social inclusion and discrimination: Racism, exclusion, hate speech and social isolation can deepen hardship, while community support and participation improve wellbeing and inclusion. [iom.int],
- Safe and inclusive digital services: Digital services should be easy to use and designed to protect privacy, personal data and online safety.
